We were sending out weekly newsletters during the Open so we decided to declutter your inboxes a little and take a break from the newsletter but, now, we’re back for good!

If you haven’t noticed we’re already made two song references already (and angered Game of Throne fans!) so get comfortable, we could be here for a while, but hopefully at the end you won’t want to turn back the hands of time!

It’s only a few days away from our BBQ on Monday the 22nd so let’s hope that the weather will behave and the sun will come out tomorrow.

We have plans for another games night in June and dodgeball trampolining so keep an eye out for invites.

Member of the month – Bob

What a man!

Something that you may not know about Bob is that before joining he managed to go from 300lbs to under 200lbs which in itself in an amazing achievement.

Since joining UV he’s improved his fitness immensely and whether it’s doing handstand push-ups, his first 5k run or getting a lot more work done in a cardio session, he has moved onto a whole new level every month.

In class Bob is great at listening and acting on what you’re asking him to do which makes him very coachable.  He’s  also incredibly supportive of everyone around him.

Bob is hard working, married to the awesome & quick witted Michelle, has really nice kids, fantastic tattoo’s and basically blows things up for a living.

In summary we all inspire to be more like Bob!

Social Corner
It’s basically summer time so on Victoria Day, Monday the 22nd of May, we’ll be hosting our first CrossFit UV BBQ of the summer.

We’ll kick off with a WOD at 10am and get the food going from 11am.

There’s no requirement to do the WOD but if you’d like to please register on Zen Planner as always.

It’s BYOG (bring your own gains) so please feel free to bring meat, dogs, babies and adults (in that order) and we’ll have a great day!

Personal Training 

You’ve heard me talk a lot about personal training (and nutrition coaching) recently because I believe that in the next few years we’ll all be incorporating both into our training in the same way that the top athletes do. So this is our chance to get ahead of the curve.

The average CrossFitter tends to follow the top athletes and we’ve seen that trend happened on numerous occasions over the years.

We regularly see videos of the reigning mens champ Mat Fraser travelling to New England to get personal training and the reigning ladies champion Katrin Davidsdottir moved from Iceland to get daily personal training.  Rich Fronning, the most successful athlete in CrossFit history, regularly brings coaches from across the US to his gym to coach him and his team.

What I’ve seen across the CrossFit industry as a whole is that it is becoming more and more common for members to have personal training (weekly, fortnightly, monthly or quarterly) built into their training and with that in mind we’ve decided to include it as an optional add on to memberships.

The Open is over and the tip of the spear are now moving on up to Regionals which kick off this weekend and will be on every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the next three weeks.

Outfit of the month

We love a good outfit at CrossFit UV, and as Mike H proved, it’s not always what you wear, but how you accessorise that counts.

Definitely a cool rider!

After cruising through his fitness test, Mike recently got accepted to the Police Academy and is currently finishing his training.  First the police and now outfit of the month,  it’s been a great month for Mike, well done!

Handstand of the month

We want you to celebrate your fitness by doing fun stuff so what’s more CrossFit taking handstand pictures EVERYWHERE!

Ok so we’re bending the rules a little with this one, however I think that you’ll agree that the fact that Rachel is now drawing about handstands shows a serious commitment to improving here’s – plus if we could all stand up like that we’d be awesome at handstands!

Help us, help you!

We’ve noticed a trend starting to emerge where some members are starting to coach others in class.

This is something that starts happening every so often and needs to be nipped in the bud asap.

It’s a tough one though, because on one hand it’s fantastic that someone genuinely wants to help someone else which we are absolutely delighted about and it speaks volumes as to the awesome community that we have.

On the other hand, quite often a person will give the wrong coaching point or address the incorrect issue or simply load the person up with way too much information (even too much correct information can lead to confusion) or more information on top of what the actual coach has said.  All of this regularly causes issues for the athlete that is being coached because they can get confused.

So to avoid any confusion please hold back on trying to coach others and let the coaches coach;)
